Damascus Camp Knife

Sheathed Unhilted 1 Unhilted 2

The maidens hair pattern welded blade was created from high layer straight laminate purchased from Iron Wolf Forge. The antler used for the grip and the horseshoe wrought iron used for the upper portion of the guard were both found while hiking. The sheath was made from an old leather wallet and some leather cord.

Iron and Bloomery Steel Cutlery

Tied Roll

The cutlery roll is shagreen tied with leather cord and a medallion of bone and coral. I forged the fork and spoon from wrought iron and I forged the knife’s blade from tatara smelted taconite bloomery steel and wrapped the handle with meteoric iron, copper wire, and silver sheet.

Frontfacing Cutlery Backfacing Cutlery

I made a separate sheath for the knife out of leather, copper, fossil shark teeth, an antique silver and gold inlaid pin, and a moldavite pendant. Additionally, I put together a stand incorporating an antique copper statuette and brass fusee mechanism so that this blade could be displayed as a desk knife.

Messenger Knife

Front Back

The profile of this knife is meant to evoke beaks and the grip is chisel engraved with the names of Odin's messenger ravens, Huginn and Muninn, in Futhark runes. It was forged from part of the same anchor rod used to create the spine for the Minoan griffin in my workshop sign.

The grip and the steel used to make the blade came from an epee my mother used as a member of the U.S. fencing team. I replaced the bell with a heavy steel washer forged to resemble a primrose.

Patch Knife

Front Back

As a child I accidentally snapped the blade off of a homemade knife blank I had found in my grandparents garage. In an effort to give this knife a second life, I forged a new tang onto the blade, adding a clipped point, attaching a copper grip, and decorating the blade with chiseled engravings and filework.

Folded Steel Kiridashi and Razor

Kiridashi Front Kiridashi Back Kiridashi Before and After

The kiridashi style marking knife was made from 7 layers of folded steel forged from a nut and bolt matching the ones pictured. Unlike traditional Japanese examples, this one features a symmetrical grind and a small false edge. I used sand as flux for the forge welding.

The iron age style razor was folded and forge welded without flux.

Bronze Stand

This integral knife was forged from a piece of ground rod. My initial intention was to carve the face on the end of the handle to resemble the mishipeshu of Native American mythology but some of the cat-like features turned out more bat-like.

Wolf Trap and Dispatch Spike

Wolf Trap and Spike Hanging Wolf Trap, Spike, and Knife

I was inspired to try my hand at producing some baroque hunting gear by the 18th century legend of the Beast of Gevaudan, as well as the long history of French luparii and wolfcatchers. The trap is inspired by a medieval design called a wolf hook. The spike was inspired by the koncerz used by Polish cavalry and the dispatch spikes used by falconers.
