Knave's Warhammer

Inspired by the riddles of Knights and Knaves, I chiseled the word “knave” into the twisted blocks on the handle of this hammer.

The stiletto blade was forged from a broken fencing foil, while the two piece guard was fashioned from a washer and a piece of rebar to resemble a primrose in bloom flanked by two buds. The handle was made from a brass piece salvaged from the broken hilt of a stage fencing dagger, stacked copper and steel sheets ground down into a fused ferrule, and a piece of bamboo.
The head and upper portion of the shaft of this warhamer were pineapple twisted to give the appearance of thorns, while the braided twist near the base of the handle was intended to evoke roots.
The inscription on the blued steel buckler comes from “The Wild Hunt” by Joahnnes Carsten Hauch.
The chainmail gauntlet is butted aluminum, reinforced with plates and wires made from steel and copper. A spike has been set into a chisel engraved wrought iron horseshoe protecting the knuckles. The brass clasp was salvaged from a 19th century scabbard.
The steel spear head has been forged with a double fuller reminiscent of those featured on Slavic rogatina spears beneath the word “dawn” engraved in dot matrix. It has been set in a socket of wrought iron salvaged from a Scottish beach. A carved steel stag head has been lashed to the base of the spear head with steel wire in emulation of the antler toggles on German hunting spears. The wooden shaft is reinforced with a spiral wound band of copper plated steel.
The blade was produced in 19th century Solingen by Carl Eickhorn. The cast brass grip came from a broken stage fencing dagger. I made the steel hilt fittings and the pewter bird skull adorning the guard, then assembled the pieces. The Latin motto I engraved into the guard, “Propere et Provide”, means “Quickly and Cautiously”. The upper guard is based on the European Sinclair hilt while the lower guard is based on the Espada Ancha of the Colonial American Southwest.
I fashioned this Ottoman and Mughal inspired half-armor to display most everything else I’ve created. The chainmail is butted aluminum with brass trim, reinforced with forged steel plates. The scales on the back and shoulder are copper plated steel with decorative filework, and the sash is St Andrews tartan.
